Dental Bonding

bondingpicThe term “tooth bonding” simply means using tooth colored composite to restore or build up teeth.  Composite has several beneficial characteristics. First, it creates a strong bond with the tooth.  Second, dental composite comes in a variety of shades so it will closely match your tooth.

Tooth bonding has progressed substantially in recent years. The material is now much harder and the chemical bond strenghts are better than ever before.  “Bonding” includes several procedures stretching from simple tooth repair to smile enhancing cosmetic dentistry procedures.

While tooth bonding is considered to be a “permanent” type of restoration a patient should not expect to get the same lasting service from it as they would from amalgam dental fillings, porcelain veneers, or dental crowns. (Keep in mind however that in dentistry the term “permanent” never equates with the phrase “will last forever.”)

Porcelain crowns or veneers are a much more permanent option for cosmetic dentistry on front teeth.  The disadvantage of porcelain is the much higher cost and more involved procedures requiring multiple appointments.  Bonding can be accomplished the same day.
